MIKE WICKER

Having been a gardener for over 25 years, I have an appreciation for the time and energy that goes into creating beautiful gardens and outdoor spaces.  When we invest in outdoor environments that are comfortable and inviting, we create a place to entertain and relax—and this connects us to others and to nature.

My own home and garden that I share with my husband has become a destination for friends and family.  Working from home, it’s also calming to be able to take a break from the computer screen and enjoy the birds, pollinators, and other wildlife that have made a home in our backyard.  In recent years, I have been incorporating more natives into the landscape. I believe the thoughtful addition of wildlife-friendly plants enhances the beauty of the existing space and brings life to the garden.

Experience has taught me that creating an outdoor oasis in North Texas, though, has some unique challenges.  Our hot and dry summers coupled with freezing temperatures means that any sustainable garden design needs to be carefully considered.  Due to environmental changes in recent years, I have become very deliberate about what plants to use in our area.  I rely heavily on dependable plants that are year-round performers.

There is nothing more frustrating than investing time and money into a landscape that doesn’t thrive or even survive.  The sun and heat can also limit the usefulness of outdoor living and dining areas in the summer.  Finding creative ways to utilize shade trees and shade structures is vital to a functional space.  Water is also a critical factor—not only water features and pools to keep us cool—but especially irrigation for the landscape.  Without a well-designed irrigation system that is integrated from the beginning, any beautiful design can become difficult and costly to sustain.

As an experienced gardener and landscape design professional, I help homeowners create outdoor spaces that are both beautiful and functional places to relax, entertain, connect, and reenergize.  Thoughtful planning can create cool, shady lounging areas that are beautiful and serene.  Sunny flower gardens can attract pollinators and create beautiful views.  A front yard with lush plantings and shade trees enhances your home’s curb appeal and welcomes visitors. By integrating thoughtful design into the existing landscape, your home’s living space can be extended outdoors.  This allows you to maximize the use of the entire property, adding value to your home and lifestyle.
